The Hazard and Risk team leads the development and delivery of evidence-based climate and disaster risk information for the department through the integration of contemporary and internationally aligned risk methodologies. The team contributes to a range of activities to support risk-informed decision making and to meet the department's disaster management responsibilities for the Queensland community.

Reporting to the Manager, you will be responsible for providing advice and support for climate and disaster risk management in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of Queensland's Disaster Management Arrangements (QDMA). You will work as part of a team contributing to the design, integration, implementation and evaluation of the department's projects, programs, systems, tools and policies to help reduce the disaster impacts on the community.

About us

As a department our purpose is to help the community to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is the primary provider of fire, rescue and emergency management programs and services throughout Queensland. The department encompasses the Fire and Rescue Service, disaster management services, the Rural Fire Service and the State Emergency Service, and also supports other volunteer groups providing emergency response to Queenslanders.

Purpose of role

The Hazard and Risk team leads the development and delivery of evidence-based climate and disaster risk information for the department through the integration of contemporary and internationally aligned risk methodologies. The team contributes to a range of activities to support risk-informed decision making and to meet the department's disaster management responsibilities for the Queensland community.

You will work as part of a team contributing to the design, integration, implementation and evaluation of the department's projects, programs, systems, tools and policies to help reduce the disaster impacts on the community.

Key requirements

Highly desirable requirements
* Knowledge and/or experience or qualifications in a relevant discipline e.g. disaster risk science, climate change, geospatial science, social science, emergency management, critical infrastructure or another related field.
Experience working in an area of applied research and/or a disaster management and operational planning or policy context.


Special requirements
* Capacity to support program delivery and emergency operations across the state, which may include work outside normal hours (e.g. nights and weekends).


Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:
* Support and contribute to the development of climate and disaster risk analysis and enhancement of operational tools and information to support and strengthen the department's decision making.
* Profile disaster risk and impacts on the department's operations, analyse information from a range of sources, drawing logical and objective conclusions to provide advice for risk-informed decision making.
* Assist with the delivery and coordination of workshops, meetings, and other activities with internal and external stakeholders to enhance awareness and reduce the impact of disasters on the community.
* Support regional staff, and other key stakeholders by providing guidance on climate and disaster risk assessment and management techniques within the context of state and national risk reduction priorities and actions.
* Assist with the preparation and review of briefing papers, submissions, reports and correspondence in accordance with departmental requirements and governance.
* Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure stakeholder requirements are met and business objectives are achieved.
* Contribute to project deliverables, monitoring and evaluating outcomes against performance targets to effectively support the department's disaster management responsibilities.
* Undertake and support operational duties during emergencies and disasters and work within a dynamic environment, fostering teamwork and actively participate in performance and development programs.
